All right, well, I've got a couple years of nothin' but soda water and diet cokes under my belt but I've got a lot more years of research and development to ad to this topic.
First of all, let's get to the bottom of the Rum and Coke controversy.
An old barfly once barked at me, "That rum is awful stuff! Y'know it's about two atoms away from kerosene!"
Oh yeah? I thought. That's pretty cool. "That's why I mix it with a little Coca-Cola ya old fart, now stop spittin' on me!"
So Rum, as you know, is sugar rendered from the sugar cane that grows so well in the Carribean Islands. Naturally rum is the color of burnt sugar. I like the dark rum 'cause it mellows the twang you get from the high alcohol content. The light stuff is great for cocktails. Pina Colada should always have light rum in it.
Now Country Dick loved Captain Morgan's spiced rum, which is a rum cocktail in the bottle, I reckon.
Mixing "the Good Captain", as Country Dick would say, with Coke? Too sweet.
A real Cuban Cuba Libre, rum, coke and lime, is served as a shot of rum and lime with a Coke chaser. No ice.
After I read that Charles Bukowski's favorite bar was Musso and Franks in Hollywood, Vicki and I stopped in and orderd the best Rum and Cokes I've ever tasted. I believe they were a modest three bucks a drink too.
My friend Dave gave me a bottle of Zaya Rum. Sippin' rum. 60 bucks a bottle. You don't mix it with anything and it tastes like smokey sex.
I suspect however the Zaya might be a blend of some kind because I drank a whole bottle and didn't get nearly as wrecked as I expected.
